Global Equity Fund: A Premier Student-Managed Investment Platform
In the world of finance, hands-on experience is invaluable. Recognizing this, the University of Maryland's Robert H. Smith School of Business established the Global Equity Fund (GEF) in 2009, providing students with a unique opportunity to manage real investments in their part-time MBA and Master of Finance programs. The GEF is managed by 22 students and primarily invests in companies outside the United States. The fund operates from its headquarters located at 1300 Pennsylvania Ave NW, Washington, DC 20004, US, and specializes in financial services.
Being a limited-enrollment fund, only a select number of students are given the chance to research companies, manage, and invest money from the school's endowment fund. The main goal of the fund managers is to outperform the MSCI All Country ex US Index. However, it is equally important that each member learns the processes by which investment decisions are made in a professional asset-management setting.
To achieve this objective, the GEF analysts conduct industry analysis, discounted cash flow (DCF) and comparable valuation, multiples, and sensitivity analysis in Excel. They utilize various resources such as Bloomberg, Morningstar, IBIS World, and 10K as references in their research and analysis. This hands-on approach not only helps students understand the intricacies of fund management but also equips them with the skills required to excel in the competitive world of finance.
The GEF's focus on companies outside the United States provides students with a global perspective on investment opportunities and challenges. This exposure to international markets encourages a broader understanding of different economies, cultures, and business practices, ultimately preparing students for leadership roles in global organizations.
Aside from the technical skills acquired through the GEF, students also benefit from the collaborative nature of the program. Managing the fund requires students to work closely with their peers, fostering teamwork, communication, and decision-making skills. This collaborative environment simulates real-world investment management scenarios, further preparing students for their future careers.
