Invest in the Boy Scouts of America:

A Letter from Michael Corcelli, Founder, Alexander Alternative Capital, Miami

Dear Friends,

Shortly before Christmas, I was humbled and honored to be named as a recipient of an award that took me back to my formative years, when I was a proud member of the Boys Scouts of America.

I was notified by the organization’s South Florida Council that along with Archbishop Thomas Wenski, of the Archdiocese of Miami, and Cesar Alvarez, Senior Chairman of the worldwide law firm Greenberg Traurig, that I would be honored on Feb. 28 of this year to receive the organization’s 2019 Distinguished Citizen Award.

Past honorees have included entrepreneurs and community leaders such as Miguel “Mike” Fernandez, Joseph Milton, Tony Argiz, Jose Mas, Brian Mormille, former U.S. Sen. Bob Graham, Joseph Amaturo and Paul Dimare.

Upon receiving word of the award, my memory instantly flashed back to the days when, with fellow troop members, I spent extended camping trips in my native Rhode Island, learned the concepts of camaraderie and teamwork among my peers and most important, came to understand how to be a business and community leader, and father and husband.

Without qualification, my years in scouting provided the foundation for what I have achieved today.

There is an indisputable truth that scouting provides one of the best ways for youth to have a positive influence in their lives.

I can submit to you that none of us who are about to receive this award will be resting on our laurels. There are future generations to be educated, and more work to be done for the community.

That is why I have continuously given time and money to philanthropic causes and business and social policy organizations that I believe are important to our community: They include the Gloria Gemma Breast Cancer Resource Foundation, Miami Freedom Forum, Council on Foreign Relations, the Florida Alternative Investment Association and the Beacon Council Banking & Finance Committee.

Then, of course, there is the Boy Scouts of America.

On Feb. 28, the South Florida Council will be conducting its annual awards ceremony, with its prime objective being to raise funds for the coming year.

Proceeds from the event will help provide the financial resources needed for the Scouts to deliver and expand local programs.

The mission of the Boy Scouts of America is to prepare young people to make ethical and moral choices over their lifetimes by instilling in them the values of the Scout Oath and Law.

The South Florida Council is one of 275 Scout councils in the United States. Ours annually serves more than 45,000 young people and supports more than 3,600 adult volunteers. The council has a proud heritage. Founded in 1911, its territory covers Broward, Miami-Dade, and Monroe counties, which are divided into multiple districts.

All of the districts offer year-round programs created to develop character, citizenship, leadership, life skills, and fitness in youth.

Based on my own personal experience, financial contributions are investments in not only our fast-changing community, but in the youth who will become the stewards of its future growth and sustainability.

Donations can be made direct by check payable to: South Florida Council, BSA, and sent to: Alicia Dunbar, Alexander Alternative Capital, PH-2, Miami, FL., 33131.

We look forward to seeing you on Feb. 28.

Sincerely,

Michael Corcelli
